In an effort to create a more joyful and experiential learning environment for students, the Ministry of Education has recently reviewed the NCERT guidelines for implementing bagless days in schools. This initiative, spearheaded by the PSS Central Institute of Vocational Education (PSSCIVE), a National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) unit, aims to make education more engaging and less stressful for students.

The Vision for Bagless Days

The concept of bagless days is designed to transform the traditional learning experience by incorporating various activities that extend beyond the confines of the classroom. The Ministry of Education’s review aims to refine these guidelines further, ensuring that they align with the goals of creating a joyful, experiential, and stress-free learning environment.

A senior Service of Instruction official expressed, “Based on this audit, PSSCIVE will assist in fine-tuning and finalizing its rules.” 

Proposed Activities and Learning Experiences

The comprehensive guidelines developed by PSSCIVE suggest a myriad of activities aimed at enriching students’ educational experiences. These activities include:

Environmental Education: Teaching students about the local ecology and how to test water purity.

Nature Appreciation: Recognizing local flora and fauna and visiting local monuments.

Cultural Exposure: Interacting with local artists and craftsmen.

Skill-Based Learning: Interning with local skill experts and participating in various hands-on activities.

The guidelines encourage periodic exposure to activities outside the classroom, such as visits to historical, cultural, and tourist sites and educational institutions within the students’ local areas. These activities are mapped to local skilling needs, ensuring relevance and practical learning.

Specific Activities Suggested by NCERT

The NCERT guidelines outline a diverse range of activities for bagless days, including:

Visiting and surveying vegetable markets

Engaging in charity visits

Conducting surveys and writing reports on pet care

Doodling, kite making, and flying

Organizing book fairs

Sitting under Banyan trees

– Visiting solar energy parks and biogas facilities

These activities are designed to foster creativity, critical thinking, and practical skills among students.

Integration with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020

The National Instruction Arrangement (NEP) 2020 suggests that understudies in Classes 6-8 take an interest in a 10-day bagless period. During this time, students are expected to intern with local skill experts and engage in activities outside traditional school settings. This recommendation aligns with the broader goals of the Bagless Days initiative, promoting a holistic approach to education that emphasizes real-world learning experiences.

The Ministry of Education’s review of the NCERT guidelines for bagless days marks a significant step towards reimagining the educational landscape in India.
